The Queen’s Jubilee Tree Planting
Overview
Summit Open Space Services is proud to be part of the Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program to honour The Queen and the legacy of her achievements during the year of her Jubilee through community-based commemorative tree planting events.
Situation
The three-year national tree planting program is part of a government initiative to:
- increase community awareness and celebration of Her Majesty’s Jubilee
- create a legacy of tree plantings across the nation
- increase and/or enhance the area of tree canopy
Funding for the trees was provided as part of a $15.1 million Government grant to eligible groups and organisations. Trees can be planted in schools, public parks, reserves, villages, along walking tracks and cycling paths, and other public places.
Project
Summit Services was the official tree planting partner for Penrith City Council and Burwood Council. In both locations, we recommended and supplied locally appropriate species that, over time, will enhance the tree canopy and leave a legacy of their own – a more beautiful environment for the community to enjoy into the future.
At the Penrith City Council planting, Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh was joined by Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen and local school and community representatives to plant the tree and unveil a commemorative plaque.
In preparation for the Burwood City Council event, the Summit Services team sculpted a sandstone plinth and plaque to mark the tree planting.
Outcomes
Over time, planting locally appropriate tree species will enhance the quality of life in our communities. Trees provide shade, helping to cool our cities and towns, improve air quality, absorb carbon and support diverse wildlife. We can’t think of a better way to honour The Queen’s 70 years of service as Australia’s Head of State.
